How to choose an email deliverability consultant in the UK
How to choose a UK email deliverability consultant: what an audit should cover, PECR and ICO checks, fees in GBP and the questions to ask before you brief.
What to take away
- A London email deliverability consultant should improve inbox placement by fixing authentication, list quality and sending behaviour, not by promising a magic reputation score.
- Ask for a written audit scope, named sender domains, sample segments and a definition of success before you share access.
- Expect a fixed-fee audit and a separate implementation quote; hourly work without a boundary is hard to compare.
- Compliance sits with you as the sender, so check consent records and suppression logic against ICO guidance.
- Use a two-week selection process with one paid discovery call and one reference check.
What a deliverability consultant in London actually does
A consultant starts with evidence, not opinion. They read your sending history, bounce logs, complaint rates and authentication records. In London, many clients run Shopify, Klaviyo or Mailchimp alongside a CRM. The consultant maps where each message originates.
Before you brief anyone, read a guide to reviewing an email agency by verified identity and a testable brief. It applies to consultants too, because a company number and a named specialist matter more than a logo wall.
The work usually falls into four areas. Authentication covers SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment. List health covers acquisition, engagement and suppression. Infrastructure covers IP strategy, throttling and warm-up. Process covers approvals, seed tests and post-send review.
The three questions that separate experts from resellers
Ask these on the first call and score the answers in the table below.
- Which sending domains and IP ranges would you inspect first, and what evidence would convince you?
- How would you segment the list, and what would you suppress before the next send?
- What does success look like after 30 days, and how would you measure it?
Expert vs reseller answers
Question
- Domains inspected
- Check your DNS
- Reputation vs content
- Rewrite your emails
- What you won't do
- We fix everything
Weak answer
- Domains inspected
- Exact domains and return-path
- Reputation vs content
- Test plan across segments
- What you won't do
- States where advice stops
Strong answer
- Domains inspected
- Reputation vs content
- What you won't do
A consultant who cannot name a sender domain or a test segment is selling generic advice.
What a deliverability audit service should cover
A proper audit covers these items:
- AuthenticationSPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment, including subdomains and forwarded traffic.
- List healthacquisition sources, engagement segments, bounce handling and suppression.
- InfrastructureIP and domain strategy, throttling, warm-up and sending volumes.
- Content and renderinglink domains, image hosting and seed-test results.
- Processapprovals, QA checks and post-send review.
- Legal basisconsent, soft opt-in and objection records for every address.
What a full audit covers
- AuthenticationSPF, DKIM, DMARC alignment
- List healthacquisition, engagement, bounces
- InfrastructureIP strategy, warm-up, throttling
- Content and linksURL reputation, unsubscribes
- Processapprovals, suppression, seed tests
- Legallawful basis for every address
Consent and suppression are legal controls, not just deliverability tactics. The Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 set the UK rules for electronic marketing, so an audit should trace every address back to a lawful basis.
The ICO's direct marketing guidance explains consent, soft opt-in and the right to object. A consultant who cannot map those points to your list is not doing a full audit.
Authentication is the first technical checkpoint; our plain-English SPF, DKIM and DMARC guide for UK domains explains the records a consultant should inspect before changing anything.
Pricing expectations for UK consultancies
Pricing varies by scope, so treat the following as an illustrative worked example, not a market average. This example is dated May 2026 and is not a quote from any named consultancy.
Illustrative London pricing
- £3,500Scoping audit
- £3,500Five-day remediation sprint
- £1,400Monthly retainer
- £700Day rate
| Line item | Illustrative GBP | What it buys | | Scoping audit | £3,500 | Authentication, list health, infrastructure and process findings. | | Remediation sprint | £3,500 | Five days at £700 per day to implement agreed fixes. | | Monthly retainer | £1,400 | Two days at £700 per day for monitoring and reviews. |
For a mid-market retailer with 250,000 contacts, the audit line is £3,500. A five-day remediation sprint at £700 per day adds £3,500. A two-day monthly retainer at £700 per day is £1,400 per month.
Ask for a day rate and a cap. A £700 day rate becomes expensive if the consultant rebuilds a preference centre you did not request.
If a consultant promises a guaranteed inbox rate, check the advertising codes. The CAP Code requires marketing claims to be evidence-based, and inbox placement cannot be guaranteed in advance.
Payment terms matter. Ask whether the fee covers a debrief, a written plan and one follow-up review. A quote that stops at the report leaves your team to implement fixes without support.
How to run a two-week selection process
- Write a one-page brief with domains, volumes, complaint rate and the decision you need.
- Ask three consultancies for a fixed-fee audit and a separate remediation estimate.
- Request two named references from UK senders with similar volumes, and ask each one which fixes were completed and what changed.
- Pay for a one-day discovery sprint with your preferred provider.
- Check the outputa written plan, owners, dates and a measurement method.
- Sign only after data protection terms and access controls are agreed.
Common questions
Do I need a London-based consultant?
Not necessarily. A remote UK expert can fix authentication and list hygiene. Local value comes from in-person workshops and shared time zones, not a postcode.
What does a deliverability audit cost?
The worked example above uses £3,500 for a scoping audit, but scope decides the final figure. Ask what is excluded, especially CRM work, copywriting and data cleaning.
Can a consultant guarantee inbox placement?
No. Authentication and list quality improve the odds, but mailbox providers make the final call. Treat any guarantee as a warning sign.
How do I check UK data protection compliance?
Map consent, soft opt-in and objection records against ICO guidance. If you cannot show where an address came from, pause the send.
