Klaviyo vs Mailchimp: deliverability and pricing for UK senders
Compare Klaviyo and Mailchimp for UK deliverability and pricing, with contact-tier figures, VAT notes and a seed test plan for BT, Sky, Outlook and Gmail.
What to take away
- Deliverability depends less on the brand name and more on authentication, list hygiene and complaint rates. Both platforms can pass or fail on those.
- UK data protection applies to either tool. You need a lawful basis, a transfer route and a retention rule for every list.
- Pricing is contact-tiered and feature-gated. Compare the total monthly cost at your own contact count, not the entry plan.
- Run a controlled seed test with BT, Sky, Outlook.com and Gmail before moving a live list.
- Keep a written record of why you chose one tool, including the test result and the contract terms.
How deliverability differs in practice
Mailchimp and Klaviyo both support SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Mailchimp uses shared IP pools on lower plans and offers dedicated IPs on Premium. Klaviyo uses shared IP pools and offers dedicated IPs for qualifying accounts.

- Complaint data
- Per flow and campaign
Mailchimp's abuse and complaint data appears in its dashboard. Klaviyo shows deliverability metrics, including bounce and complaint rates, per flow and campaign. UK mailbox providers filter on engagement.
BT Internet and Sky Yahoo Mail both apply bulk sender rules. Microsoft Outlook.com uses Smart Network Data Services for reputation. Google Gmail uses Postmaster Tools. Check those dashboards if you send at volume.
Before you blame the platform, work through SPF, DKIM and DMARC setup for UK domains. A missing alignment record will hurt both tools.
Shared IP reputation matters. One sender's complaint spike can affect your placement. Dedicated IPs need volume to warm up, so small lists may do worse.
UK data residency and GDPR controls
UK GDPR does not ban US hosting. It requires a lawful transfer mechanism and clear records. The ICO's UK GDPR guidance sets out those duties.
UK GDPR vendor checks
- Ask where personal data is stored
- List which subprocessors see data
- Confirm how deletion works
- Get answers in the contract
- Draw the email data path
- Record lawful basis per list source
Mailchimp's public subprocessor list names Amazon Web Services. Klaviyo's public subprocessor list also names Amazon Web Services. Ask each vendor where personal data is stored and how deletion works. Get the answer in the contract, not in a sales call.
The practical control is drawing the email data path before you configure forms, tags or automations. That record shows what leaves the UK and why.
For consent and soft opt-in, check the ICO's direct marketing and privacy guidance. It covers electronic mail under PECR.
PECR sits alongside UK GDPR. The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 govern unsolicited electronic mail.
Keep a record of the lawful basis for each list source. A purchased list cannot be rescued by a platform feature.

Add migration time, template rebuild and DNS changes to the total. Those costs often exceed a monthly tier difference.
VAT treatment matters for UK businesses. A headline dollar price is not the same as a sterling invoice with VAT.
Other tools to benchmark: MailerLite free covers 1,000 subscribers. Brevo free allows 300 sends/day, Omnisend free covers 500 emails/month, and Campaign Monitor starts at $9/month for 500 contacts. Dotdigital is UK-listed and quotes on request.
Run a fair test before you migrate
A fair test needs a stated pass rule. For example, pass if inbox placement is at least 95 per cent and complaint rate is below 0.10 per cent across all seed mailboxes. Fail if either measure is worse than the control.
- Pick one list segment with clean consent and recent engagement.
- Authenticate the sending domain in both tools and verify SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment.
- Send the same campaign content to a seed list across BT, Sky, Outlook.com and Gmail.
- Compare inbox, spam and complaint outcomes, not open rates.
- Keep the incumbent tool as control until the test completes.
- Document the result and the decision owner.
Use live addresses that have opted in, and suppress non-openers. Do not use synthetic addresses for deliverability.
Common questions
Does Klaviyo deliver better than Mailchimp in the UK?
Results depend on authentication, list quality and engagement. Test both with your own UK mailbox providers.
Is Mailchimp cheaper than Klaviyo for UK senders?
At 500 contacts, Mailchimp Standard and Klaviyo email both list at $20/month. At 1,000 contacts, Klaviyo lists $30/month while Mailchimp Essentials lists about $26/month.
Can I keep data in the UK with either platform?
Both are US-founded providers, so ask about data location and transfer safeguards. UK GDPR allows transfers only with a lawful mechanism. Get this in writing.
What should I check first if UK emails go to spam?
- Check SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment for the sending domain.
- Check the complaint rate and unsubscribe rate for the last 30 days.
- Check list hygieneremove hard bounces and unengaged addresses.
- Check content for spam-trigger phrases and broken links.
- Check sending volume and whether you have warmed a dedicated IP.
- If all pass, ask the platform support to review the sending IP reputation.
